Mole diagnosis and removal

Moles are by definition harmless benign pigmented growths. However, if their appearance changes in size, color or feel they need to be checked due to the potential risk of malignancy (melanoma).

When you visit us, our board-certified dermatologists will give you a full assessment of the status of your skin. One of the most frequent areas of concern are moles that we notice are:

  •  Irregular in shape
  • Raised
  • Changing in size or color

If the dermatologists come across a mole that looks suspicious they take a small sample for testing - it's important to catch skin cancer in its early stages in order to fight it properly. Later, if the results determine that the mole is cancerous or pre-cancerous, our dermatologists will perform a simple, in-office mole removal procedure.

If you have any moles that are worrisome to you, please do not hesitate to contact our offices today for an examination.

Types of Skin Cancer

  • Actinic Keratosis
AK's usually occur on skin parts that are largely exposed to the sun. They usually look like small crusty, scaly, or crumbly bumps or horns. Early on, they may appear and then fade away. Sometimes they are more easily detected by feeling them than by sight.

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma
This is one of the most common skin cancer type, mainly caused by long-term sun exposure. Frequently, two or more features are present in one tumor. In addition, basal cell carcinoma sometimes resembles non-cancerous skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema.

  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common skin cancer following basal cell carcinoma. They usually appear as thick, rough, scaly patches that may bleed easily. They often look like warts and sometimes appear as open sores. The skin around the site may exhibit signs of wrinkling, pigment changes, and loss of elasticity.

  • Melanoma
Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. Even so, if diagnosed and removed while it is still thin and limited to the outermost skin layer, it is almost 100% curable. Once the cancer advances and spreads to other parts of the body, it is hard to treat and can be deadly

PDT Therapy

Here at Central Carolina Dermatology, we offer Photodynamic Therapy (PDT or Blue Light Therapy), which is considered the most technologically advanced treatment. For more information on what PDT therapy is and how it can cure skin cancer, please visit this link .

Psoriasis Treatment

Psoriasis is sometimes mistaken for eczema. The difference with psoriasis is that it can involve the joints as well as skin, nails and scalp. While there is no found cure for psoriasis, there are many new treatment options available to make the patient’s life more comfortable.

Medical research has yet to uncover the cause of psoriasis, a skin condition that can even lead to arthritis. Psoriasis is excess in skin cell production, which can appear as an inflamed, red, scaly patch in the following areas:

  • Elbows
  • Genitals
  • Knees
  • Scalp

Psoriasis is not contagious but it is chronic – this means that treatments can only serve in minimizing the frequency and size of outbreaks and help in any discomfort the patient feels.

There are several types of treatment we can recommend for Psoriasis, including:

  • Creams and ointments
  • Oral medication regimen
  • Phototherapy

If you'd like to come in and talk to us about your psoriasis, we'd be happy to customize a treatment plan that fits your lifestyle.
